The “Central Heritage Road” is rediscovered: Hue – Da Nang – Hoi An by train
The Central region of Vietnam has long been famous for its “Central Heritage Road”, connecting three important cultural destinations Hue – Da Nang – Hoi An. Recently, this tourist route is being implemented thanks to the cruise ship products “Central Heritage Connection” running between Hue and Da Nang.
This train line was officially opened on March 26, 2024, deployed by Vietnam Railways Corporation in coordination with local authorities to strengthen tourism connections between the two cities and create a new experience product for tourists.

The journey lasts about 3 hours, passing through Hai Van Pass – a place known as “The most majestic landscape in the world”. From on board, visitors can see the intersection between the Truong Son range and the East Sea, one of the most impressive coastal landscapes in Vietnam.
The cruise line also passes by Lang Co Bay, which is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world, creating a unique scenic journey for international tourists.
Unlike conventional ships, this cruise ship is designed as a mobile cultural experience space, including:
- 5 air-conditioned soft seat cars
- 1 car for community activities
- Performing Hue royal court music and ao dai
- Serving local cuisine on board.
This helps the travel journey become part of the travel experience, instead of just a means of transportation.
Scenic Railway Experiences Are Rising in Demand
In recent years, the international tourism market is witnessing a sharp increase in the trends of “experiential travel” and “slow travel”, in which tourists not only care about the destination but also focus on the experience during the travel journey.
According to data from the Vietnam tourism agency, train travel is recovering and growing rapidly after the pandemic. In 2023, Vietnam will record about 10 million domestic visitors and 1.5 million international visitors traveling by train, an increase of 15% and 20% respectively compared to the previous year. This shows the growing demand for rail travel products and journey experiences.
This trend is also clearly reflected in the Hue – Da Nang tourist train route “Connecting Central Heritage”. In just a short time after opening in 2024, the train line has served more than 27,600 passengers, of which nearly 2,200 are international visitors, showing the appeal of rail tourism products combined with heritage experiences.

Besides, the number of tourists coming to the Central region – especially Hue – is also growing strongly. In 2025, Hue welcomes about 6.3 million tourists, including 1.9 million international visitors, an increase of more than 61% compared to the previous year.

On a national scale, Vietnam’s tourism industry is also recovering strongly. In the first 6 months of 2025, Vietnam welcomed 10.7 million international visitors, an increase of 20.7% over the same period last year, showing that the demand to explore new travel experiences in Vietnam is continuing to increase.

These data show that products that combine heritage – landscape – journey experience, such as the Hue – Da Nang train route through Hai Van Pass, have great potential in attracting international visitors, especially from markets that love scenic railways and slow travel such as Europe, Australia and North America.
Why Travel Agents Should Add the Heritage Train to Their Tours
For travel agents and tour operators, the Hue – Da Nang heritage ship brings many benefits when designing tour programs:
Create a unique highlight for the tour: The train journey through Hai Van Pass brings a different landscape experience than traveling by car.
Increase the value of the tour program: Although the travel time is equivalent to the road trip, the train experience makes the tour more special and memorable.
Easily integrated into your itinerary.
For example:
- Hue – Da Nang – Hoi An 4 days
- Central Vietnam Discovery 5 days
Increase upsell opportunities.
Can be combined with experiences such as:
- food tour Hue cuisine.
- Hoi An lantern making workshop.
- Da Nang beach resort.
