Luang Prabang Pilots Free Buses – A New Step For Green Tourism

Luang Prabang launches free buses to make getting around easier. This pilot program offers a convenient and environmentally friendly transportation experience.

PUBLIC BUS SERVICE MAKES IT EASY FOR TOURISTS TO GET AROUND
The Luang Prabang government recently announced a plan to test free public buses. The program will run from February 24 to March 2. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion and encourage people to use public transportation.

Bus routes connecting Luang Prabang to major tourist destinations

The service operates on three main routes:

  • Route 1: From That Luang to the Khan River and the Mekong River. Nine buses operate from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. There is a bus every 10 minutes.
  • Route 2: From That Luang to Kuang Si Waterfall. Five buses run every hour from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. This route stops at 43 locations.
  • Route 3: From That Luang to the Laos-China Railway Station. Four buses run on a similar schedule, stopping at 31 locations.

In addition to buses, a free tuk-tuk service is also available. Tuk-tuks operate from That Luang to Pak Khan, making it convenient for visitors to tour the city without the need for personal vehicles.

LUANG PRABANG AIMS FOR GREEN TRANSPORT
The project is supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The local government wants to reduce dependence on private vehicles and build a sustainable transport model. This will help reduce congestion, protect the environment and preserve the urban landscape. Two types of buses will be deployed in the trial: electric buses and double-seat buses. This will help tourists travel more comfortably and safely. Electric buses also reduce emissions, helping to make the air cleaner.

Luang Prabang aims for a sustainable green transport model

Mr. Blong Vang Vangjiasa, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport of Luang Prabang Province, affirmed that this is an important step to help the city develop green tourism. If successful, this model can be applied in the long term, helping Luang Prabang become a leading sustainable destination in the region. With these changes, Luang Prabang will become an ideal place to visit. If you plan to come here, experience the free bus system for a convenient and enjoyable trip.
