Interesting Things About Traveling to Myanmar

Myanmar is located in the western part of the South-Central Peninsula, covering an area of 676,581 square kilometers and home to nearly 50 million people from 135 ethnic groups. It is considered a sacred land of Buddhism, with 80% of the population following the religion. Here, you will have the chance to explore many beautiful tourist attractions, enjoy a peaceful pace of life, and witness with your own eyes the magnificent and sacred pagodas.

Weather
Myanmar has a monsoonal climate with three main seasons: autumn, rainy season, and dry season. The hottest time of the year is from mid-February to May, during which there is little to no rain. The rainy season lasts from May to October, and the cool dry weather spans from October to February. The best time to visit Myanmar is considered to be from November to February, when the weather is cool and there is little rain. However, during this peak season, the prices of tourism services are usually quite high, and hotel rooms in central areas may be fully booked.

Scenery and Currency
English is fairly widely spoken in Myanmar, especially in government offices, so language barriers are not a big concern for travelers. The official currency in Myanmar is the kyat. You can exchange money at the airport or at state banks, although the exchange rates there are typically much lower than market rates. The beautiful natural landscapes and the hospitality of the Myanmar people always leave a lasting impression on visitors.

You should also be well-informed about Myanmar’s basic customs regulations when entering the country. You are only allowed to bring in 200 cigarettes, one bottle of liquor, and one bottle of perfume. If you are carrying foreign currency, it must be declared on a customs form, as Myanmar customs officers thoroughly inspect luggage upon departure. If you are found to be carrying more foreign currency than declared, you may be fined. Exceeding luggage limits can also result in confiscation and penalties.

Customs and Culture

Myanmar is a Buddhist country, and as such, religious architecture and cultural elements deeply influenced by Buddhism can be seen everywhere. Pagodas are found throughout the country, with the most famous being the golden Shwedagon Pagoda in the capital city, Yangon, and a complex of over 200 Buddhist temples in Bagan. During your journey, you will likely visit many sacred temples and pagodas, so it is important to dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering, and show respect to monks and devotees.

In Myanmar, you will also encounter many interesting customs and cultural traits. For example, Myanmar people do not have family names—only given names. When greeting each other, they usually bow slightly or place their hands together in front of their chest. Typically, people in Myanmar eat only two main meals a day: one at 9 a.m. and another at 5 p.m., with a light lunch in between. A traditional meal often includes vegetables, shrimp, and fish. Rather than using chopsticks, they eat rice with their hands.

The people of Myanmar have a great affection for birds and buffaloes. As a result, if they encounter a buffalo on the road, they will always give way and allow it to pass first.

One particularly unique custom in Myanmar is related to beauty standards for women. From the age of five, a Burmese girl is expected to wear a waist belt and embroider 30 additional belts. These belts are seen as a symbol of beauty and femininity. When a man chooses a woman to marry, the size and shape of her waist—partly influenced by these belts—are considered an important factor in his decision.
