Hoa Lo Prison, once a quiet relic in Hanoi, Vietnam, has become a unique attraction and experience for many young people and tourists today.
FORMATION OF HOA LO PRISON
Hoa Lo Prison Gate
At the end of the 19th century, to counteract the growing resistance movements, the French colonialists intensified their repression. By adding police forces, completing the court system, and building a network of prisons. In 1896, on the land of Phu Khanh village, Vinh Xuong commune, Tho Xuong district, the French colonialists built Hoa Lo prison. This was one of the largest prisons in Indochina.

From a pottery village, the French turned Hoa Lo into a place to imprison and exile prisoners. Despite the harsh prison regime, the prison became a school. And it was also a place to popularize revolutionary theories. Many people organized escapes to return to the people and the organization. From 5th August, 1964 to 31st March, 1973, the prison was also used to detain American pilots. During this period, American pilots gave Hoa Lo the humorous name “Hanoi Hilton”.
The historical site of Hoa Lo Prison also attracts many foreign tourists
In 1993, the Government decided to change the purpose of Hoa Lo Prison. The remaining Southeast part was preserved, restored and embellished. It was then ranked as a historical relic of Hanoi. There is a memorial to the patriotic soldiers who heroically sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the nation.
