In Vietnam, when mentioning holidays of the year, we must definitely mention New Year, Lunar New Year, National Day… These important holidays all have many interesting meanings and are enthusiastically celebrated by the whole country.
There are many major holidays in Vietnam
The holidays of the year are an occasion for people to remember the merits of their predecessors. This is also a time to gather with family or send each other blessings, pray for peace and luck. If you do not know which are the important holidays, please refer to the following article from Anvui Travel!
1. NEW YEAR & LUNAR NEW YEAR
1.1. New Year
New Year is one of the holidays of the year. Tet will start on January 1 every year. This day is also the first day of the year according to the Gregorian calendar.
New Year’s Day originated from the ancient Roman calendar system. This calendar was called Romulus and included 10 months from the Spring Equinox (about March 21 of the current Gregorian calendar). Later, the second king of Rome improved it to the Numa calendar with 12 months. When the Roman Republic came, the Numa calendar was modified into the Roman Republican calendar. The Roman nation chose January 1 to start the new year, but due to different cultural and political practices, this system was improved into the Julian calendar, laying the foundation for the Gregorian calendar today.
In Vietnam, the New Year was applied during the French colonial period, when the Western calendar was very popular and began to be used instead of the traditional Lunar calendar. From here, the New Year has become an important traditional holiday for the whole nation.

1.2. Lunar New Year
In addition to the New Year, the Lunar New Year is also one of the major holidays of the year in Vietnam. This is the biggest New Year of the year, taking place in spring, the time when a four-season cycle ends and a new cycle begins. Lunar New Year is usually later than the New Year due to the rule of 3 leap years and 1 month of the Lunar calendar.
Therefore, Tet will last for about 7-8 days at the end of the old year and 7-8 days at the beginning of the new year (December 23 to January 7).
According to Professor, Doctor, and researcher Nguyen Van Huyen, writing in the magazine Indochine, the Lunar calendar is based on the movement of the moon. Each month will begin on a new moon day and the new year will begin on the day the moon appears when the sun leaves the Tropic of Cancer. Tet usually opens in spring and falls on the last 10 days of January to the third day of February. There are also many authors who have researched the origin of Tet Nguyen Dan, however, there is no document that can accurately determine when this holiday began in Vietnam.
Tet Nguyen Dan brings many meanings of a new beginning, a new month, a new year. This is also an occasion for children and family members to reunite and celebrate Tet together happily. More specifically, on Tet, everyone gives each other wishes with the hope of bringing good luck in the coming year.

2. HUNG KINGS’ COMMEMORATION DAY
When talking about all the holidays of the year, we cannot ignore Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day. This day takes place on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month every year at Hung Temple, Viet Tri, Phu Tho. The Commemoration Day originates from the legend of Lac Long Quan and Au Co. Both are considered the ancestors of the Vietnamese people, the parents of Hung Kings.

Therefore, this is the day when people across the country express their respect and gratitude to the Hung Kings who built and defended the country as well as the ancestors who protected the country for the people. In addition, Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day is also a day for everyone to promote the world about World Cultural Heritage. This is the day for the entire Party, the entire army, and the entire people to engrave in their minds the advice of President Ho Chi Minh “The Hung Kings built the country. We, uncles and nephews, must work together to defend the country”.
3. LIBERATION DAY OF THE SOUTH 30/4
Speaking of holidays in the year, we certainly cannot ignore Liberation Day of the South 30/4. Many people wonder what day is April 30? This is the day of Liberation of the South, reunification of the country, ending the war in Vietnam.
The origin of the holiday of April 30 is the event when President Duong Van Minh and Prime Minister Vu Van Mau of the Republic of Vietnam declared their surrender to the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. And to mark this historic event as well as to remember the merits of the late President of Vietnam, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.
Liberation of the South 30/4
Liberation Day of the South 30/4 is a holiday of great historical significance, demonstrating the indomitable will, the strength of solidarity or the tradition of building and defending the country of our people. This is also an opportunity to remind descendants of the sacrifices of our compatriots who fell for independence, freedom and development.
4. INTERNATIONA LABOR DAY 1/5
After April 30, May 1 is also one of the annual holidays in Vietnam. This is an international holiday for the working class that originated in the second half of the 19th century, from the conflict between employers and workers in some capitalist countries.
The heavy exploitation of labor in some factories and industrial production enterprises has oppressed the rights of workers. Typically, on May 1, 1886, most American workers participated in a strike to protect the right to work a maximum of 8 hours/day. However, this incident was severely suppressed and from there caused the Haymarket massacre in Chicago. From here, the struggle of workers and laborers rose up a strong wave and their demands were soon accepted.
International Labor Day has many meanings
Later, the Second Communist International took May 1 as the day to demonstrate the strength and common struggle of the proletariat. This is also the day to commemorate the movement to fight against colonialism and imperialism, marking the regaining of independence – freedom – democracy and economic and social rights. International Labor Day May 1 is one of the world’s annual holidays, honoring the fierce struggles of workers and the spirit of revolutionary solidarity between Vietnam and the world.
5. NATIONAL DAY
What is September 2? This is the day President Ho Chi Minh read the “Declaration of Independence” at Ba Dinh Square. On this day, working people will have a day off to celebrate. September 2, 1945 is also the day Uncle Ho solemnly announced to all Vietnamese people and the world the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (Socialist Republic of Vietnam).
The National Day celebration on 2nd September is one of the important holidays of the year.
The celebration of National Day on September 2 helps descendants remember the sacrifices of their predecessors to give birth to Vietnam. In addition, this is also the day for everyone to remember President Ho Chi Minh’s sacred oath “the entire Vietnamese people are determined to devote all their spirit and strength, their lives and property to maintain that freedom and independence”.
