Sun PhuQuoc Airways A330 Approval: New Long Haul Opportunities for Travel Agents

Sun PhuQuoc Airways’ approval to operate Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft and extend operations to Europe strengthens Phu Quoc’s long-haul connectivity. For travel partners, the shift opens new opportunities to package direct-access island stays for higher-value international markets.

Phu Quoc’s development as an international destination increasingly depends on one factor beyond hotels and attractions: direct air access. On September 30, 2026, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam approved Sun PhuQuoc Airways to operate Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft and expanded the airline’s approved operating territory to Europe.

The timing is significant. Phu Quoc welcomed approximately 1.92 million international visitors in the first nine months of 2026, around 60% more than in the same period of 2025, according to figures attributed to the An Giang Department of Tourism.

A330 Operations Expand Phu Quoc’s Long Haul Potential

Sun PhuQuoc Airways received its first Airbus A330, registered VN-A969, at Phu Quoc International Airport on September 22, 2026. The aircraft is the first of eight A330s the airline plans to add by April 2027.

The A330 approval allows the airline to move beyond a network built mainly around narrow-body operations. Its first announced international A330 service is scheduled between Phu Quoc and Moscow from November 13, 2026. The airline has also indicated plans to deploy A330 aircraft on Japan services from January 2027 and Australia from May 2027, while studying further opportunities in Europe and Central Asia.

Travel partners should distinguish between regulatory approval and confirmed routes. Approval for European operations creates the framework for expansion, but additional European city pairs remain potential developments rather than established services.

The Demand Side Is Already Strengthening

Air capacity matters commercially when demand is moving in the same direction. Phu Quoc recorded more than 8.57 million visitors during the first nine months of 2026, up 30.5% year on year. International arrivals exceeded 1.92 million, increasing 60.2%, while tourism revenue reached approximately VND45.976 trillion, up 47.7%. September alone brought 208,447 international visitors, an increase of 85.2% year on year, despite the month falling within Phu Quoc’s rainy season.

The wider Vietnamese market is also expanding. Vietnam received 17.68 million international arrivals in the first nine months of 2026, 14.5% more than during the same period of 2025, according to the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.

For product managers, Phu Quoc’s substantially faster international growth is worth watching.

Why Direct Long Haul Access Matters to Travel Agents

Direct connectivity changes the product proposition. For travellers originating in long-haul markets, connections through regional hubs add journey time, baggage handling and another potential disruption point. A direct service can make Phu Quoc more viable as the core reason for travelling rather than simply a beach extension at the end of a wider Vietnam itinerary. This is particularly relevant for leisure clients seeking resort stays of five nights or more, couples, families, winter sun travellers and higher-value customers who place greater importance on convenience.

It also creates possibilities for tour operators to build products around Phu Quoc plus mainland Vietnam, rather than automatically routing every client through Ho Chi Minh City first.

Turning Connectivity Into Sellable Products

Three product directions are especially relevant.

  • Long haul winter escape: Phu Quoc can be positioned as a warm-weather island stay combining resort time, dining, marine experiences and entertainment. Direct Moscow connectivity makes this particularly relevant to the Russian winter market.
  • Vietnam culture plus beach: Agents can combine Hanoi, Central Vietnam or Ho Chi Minh City with a four to six night Phu Quoc extension, giving long-haul clients both cultural depth and relaxation within one journey.
  • Premium island stay: Improved wide-body connectivity can support programmes for clients who prioritize convenient access, high-standard accommodation, private transfers, curated dining and individually paced experiences.

The commercial value lies not only in selling more nights. A longer stay creates more room for upgrades, excursions, private services, dining experiences and higher-category accommodation.

Operational Considerations for Product Managers

The new aviation capacity should be treated as an opportunity rather than an assumption.

Agents should monitor confirmed schedules, frequencies, seasonality, seat availability and connections before designing guaranteed programmes around individual routes. The announced Moscow service begins on November 13, 2026, while Japan and Australia A330 deployment remains scheduled for later phases.

Airport capacity is also evolving. Under Vietnam’s approved planning, Phu Quoc International Airport is expected to reach a design capacity of around 10 million passengers annually by 2030, alongside infrastructure improvements connected with preparations for APEC 2027.

How An Vui Travel Supports Travel Partners

An Vui Travel works with international travel partners to develop tailor-made Vietnam programmes around actual traveller profiles and available air access.

For Phu Quoc products, this can include accommodation planning, private transfers, island experiences, local dining, domestic extensions and combinations with Hanoi, Central Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City or the Mekong Delta.

The objective is not simply to add Phu Quoc to an itinerary, but to determine where the island creates sufficient client value to justify the additional nights and services.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways’ A330 approval gives Phu Quoc greater potential to compete for long-haul demand, while rapidly rising international arrivals indicate that the destination already has meaningful market momentum.

For travel agents, the opportunity is to watch how confirmed routes develop and use better connectivity to create longer, higher-value and more convenient Vietnam products. The strongest programmes will connect traveller motivation with suitable experiences, sensible routing and reliable local operations.
