What Phu Quoc’s New Resort Check-In Means for MICE Planners

Phu Quoc’s new resort-based airline check-in moves flight procedures and checked baggage into selected hotels, reducing departure friction for eligible passengers. For MICE planners, the service shows how operational convenience can become part of destination competitiveness and product design.

For MICE groups, the final morning can be as operationally demanding as the event itself. Hundreds of delegates may need to check out, consolidate luggage, board coaches and reach different flights within tightly controlled time windows.

Phu Quoc is now testing a different approach. Since April 2026, Sun PhuQuoc Airways has offered hotel-based flight check-in and checked-baggage services at La Festa Phu Quoc and New World Phu Quoc Resort. Eligible passengers can receive boarding passes and leave checked luggage at the hotel before travelling to the airport.

For travel companies developing MICE and incentive programmes, the significance is not simply a more convenient check-out. It is an example of how destination logistics can become part of the product itself.

Phu Quoc Is Building More Than a Resort Market

The new service arrives as Phu Quoc is strengthening its position for international events and higher-value tourism.

Phu Quoc welcomed more than 8.1 million visitors in 2025, including nearly 2 million international arrivals, while its airport handled around 100 flights per day, nearly half of them international services, according to the Vietnamese Government Portal.

Demand is also rising nationally. Vietnam received 15.91 million international visitors during the first eight months of 2026, up 14.4% year on year. More than 13.22 million arrived by air, reinforcing the importance of aviation convenience in international tourism product development.

At the same time, infrastructure planned around APEC 2027 is increasing Phu Quoc’s potential event capacity. Current plans include expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport toward annual capacity of approximately 20–24 million passengers, while the planned APEC Convention and Exhibition Centre is designed for events of up to 10,000 people.

For agents, this combination matters. A destination competing for large corporate groups needs more than meeting space. It needs an efficient journey from arrival to departure.

Why Resort Check-In Matters for MICE Planners

The practical benefit becomes clearer when viewed through group operations. A conventional departure may require organisers to coordinate hotel check-out, luggage loading, coaches, airport arrival buffers, airline counters and delegates travelling on different schedules. Moving part of the airline process into the resort can reduce the number of tasks concentrated at the airport.

That can be particularly relevant for incentive groups, corporate retreats and conferences where the organiser is responsible for the experience of dozens or hundreds of passengers.

It can also create more usable time on the final day. Instead of designing the programme entirely around baggage handling and airport procedures, planners may have more flexibility for a final meeting, lunch, leisure activity or relaxed resort departure.

The commercial proposition therefore becomes broader than “conference plus hotel.” It becomes “a managed island event experience from arrival through departure.”

Turning Operational Convenience Into a Sellable Product

For international travel partners, Phu Quoc can be positioned around three product directions.

  • Corporate retreat plus resort stay: A small or medium-sized company group combines meetings with several nights at a beach resort, team activities and informal networking.
  • Conference plus incentive extension: Delegates attend a formal event before adding one or two days of island experiences, entertainment or relaxation.
  • Executive incentive programme: Higher-value groups combine premium accommodation, private transport, dining and selected island experiences with an emphasis on smooth logistics.

The destination also allows programmes to extend beyond the meeting room. Southern Phu Quoc offers access to Sunset Town, Kiss Bridge, Hon Thom and entertainment options that can be integrated into group programmes depending on timing and group profile.

Operational Limits Travel Agents Should Understand

The resort check-in service should not yet be presented as an island-wide MICE solution. As of September 2026, it is available only at La Festa Phu Quoc and New World Phu Quoc Resort, for Sun PhuQuoc Airways passengers, during designated service windows.

Agents therefore need to verify airline eligibility, resort selection, flight schedules, group size, baggage procedures and airport transfer timing before building the service into a proposal. For larger groups using several airlines or hotels, conventional airport procedures may still form part of the operation.

Resort-based airline check-in will not by itself make Phu Quoc a major international MICE hub. Its importance lies in what it represents: greater attention to the complete delegate journey. For travel agents, that creates a useful product-development principle. MICE competitiveness increasingly depends not only on venues and rooms, but also on how smoothly accommodation, transport, experiences and aviation connect into one programme.

An Vui Travel can support travel partners with Phu Quoc routing, accommodation coordination, transfers, group activities and customised MICE or incentive programme development. The objective is to match the traveller profile and business purpose with an itinerary that remains realistic on the ground.
