Da Lat’s Airport Reopens: A New Gateway for B2B

Lam Dong Province, Vietnam — After nearly six months of closure for a major runway overhaul, Lien Khuong International Airport — the gateway to the hill resort city of Da Lat — has come back online and welcomed its first international flight since reopening. For companies exploring trade, sourcing, tourism, or investment opportunities in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, this milestone re-establishes a direct air bridge between Da Lat and key regional business centers, with more capacity than before.

Six Months Grounded, Now Airborne Again

Lien Khuong closed in early March 2026 for a full runway and taxiway rehabilitation project. It reopened at midnight on August 19, 2026, when the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) held an inauguration ceremony marking the project’s completion — and, notably, the return of the Da Lat–Can Tho domestic route after nearly six years of suspension.

Two weeks later, on September 2 (Vietnam’s National Day), the airport reached a further milestone: AirAsia Flight AK571 from Kuala Lumpur touched down at 10:58 a.m., carrying the first international passengers back to Da Lat. The return flight, AK572, departed for Kuala Lumpur at 11:40 a.m. the same day, officially restarting scheduled international service on the route.

Built to Handle More: Inside the Upgrade

The rehabilitation project represented a capital investment of more than VND 1.03 trillion (approximately US$39.24 million), commencing in March 2026. The work went well beyond basic repairs, covering:

• The full 3,250-meter, 45-meter-wide 09/27 runway
• Taxiways and aircraft safety areas
• Drainage systems
• Runway and approach lighting and other flight-support facilities

The result is an airport now certified to handle Code C and D aircraft — including the B737, B757, A320, A321, A300, and ATR72 — operating at their maximum allowable payload. That’s a meaningful upgrade from pre-closure capacity, and it directly translates into more seats, more cargo space per flight, and a more resilient schedule for the routes that depend on it.

In its initial post-reopening phase, the airport is projected to handle 36–40 flights and around 6,800 passengers per day — nearly 1,000 more daily passengers than before the closure. Total passenger throughput for the final four months of 2026 alone is forecast at approximately 816,000.

One Route Live, One More on the Way

The international network is being rebuilt route by route:

• Da Lat–Kuala Lumpur — now flying four times a week via AirAsia, the first international connection restored.
• Da Lat–Singapore — scheduled to launch in December 2026 with three weekly flights, adding a second major Southeast Asian financial and logistics hub to the network.

On the domestic side, connections to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Vinh, Hai Phong, and Can Tho have all resumed, restoring Da Lat’s links to Vietnam’s principal commercial centers.

A more attractive base for MICE and corporate travel Da Lat’s cool highland climate and expanding tourism infrastructure already make it a popular choice for conferences, incentive trips, and corporate retreats. Easier international access lowers a real barrier for companies bringing in overseas clients, partners, or staff.

A signal of sustained regional infrastructure investment The scale of the rehabilitation project — and the province’s stated push to diversify international visitor markets and strengthen ties with major regional hubs — points to continued government investment in Lam Dong’s transport and tourism infrastructure, a positive indicator for medium-term market planning.
